About the artist and his artwork:
Born 1985 in Ft. Worth, Texas, Taurean Washington gravitated to art at an early age. In 2011, he earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Studio Art from Hood College in Frederick. While in school, Taurean realized that there were not any African American artists included in his course of study. As a result, Taurean sought artists he could relate to, including prominent figures such as Jean Michel Basquiat, Robert Colescott, and Kerry James Marshall, who became role models for him.
Taurean’s work is an eclectic mix of the Modern and Contemporary Art that came before him. As a fan of hip hop music, Taurean taps into the art of sampling. Lyrics from songs are often referenced directly or indirectly in each piece. Audio instrumentals are also used as a backdrop to provide a soundtrack for the viewer to follow. It is Taurean’s goal to create “classic albums”–a hip hop term for a great body of work–through which he can share his voice, like a hip hop artist on a microphone.
Taurean’s work is showcased in several galleries and venues in Baltimore, Frederick, and Columbia, Maryland.
