September 15th shows: Ghost Baby (w/ Ash Cheshire) @area31 + “Kinny” Mr Husband @nola

That’s a damn lie, there’s more shows going on than the title mentions. And isn’t it so Frederick that there’s some smattering of shows here and there until suddenly BAM there’s tons of shows all in one day.

Yo, narrator — Calm the fuck down, it’s all going to work out : On Saturday September 15 (we’ll just dub this the ides of September) Matt & Kim at Flying Dog is all sold out (kudos to the band, to Flying Dog and all the people coming to the Brewery to catch this Brooklyn act. ICYMI – FNP interviewed Kim Schifino, check that here). For all those who are about to rock [in Frederick] without a Matt & Kim ticket -thank buddha, or the stars  – there’s more stellar shows on Saturday nite – AND the best part: the timeframes DON’T CONFLICT.  It’s a September festivus miracle.

picture the scene – it’s saturday nite in frederick and you and yr amigos y amigas are roaming the streets, silently observing the bro culture on display on market street -as if you are a modern day Jane Goodall.  You look at yr digital clock on the phone, it’s getting close to 9pm so it’s time to  boogie on down to Patrick street.

Fast forward to 9pm – get thee to Area 31 (tucked in an alley on 31 E. Patrick St between McGuire’s Fine Arts and the non-descript Verizon building) to take in what will undoubtedly be a hella show with Ghost Baby. Olivia Solomon, who performs in her moniker as Ghost Baby, creates magically atmospheric indie melodies with nothing but her guitar and her other powerful weapon  – her haunting vocal cords that envelops the entire room. Minimalist – yes – and in this case, less is more.

For this show she’s adding a twist: Ash Cheshire. You know her from her own incredible band Cheshi (a band perpetually poised to blow up the indie rock world); she’ll be accompanying Olivia and it’s gonna be a real treat to anyone who knows the speakeasy password to Area 31 (hint: there’s no password, just an adventurous mindset in seeking out the location of Area 31).  There should be more than just musical atmosphere if you decide to go, our understanding is that something, not exactly sure what but something interesting will be added to the spectacle surrounding this particular show.  Get there early to browse Ash Cheshire’s solo art show, on exhibit for the month of September at Area 31.

When the concert ends it will be 10pm. You (and the rest of the crowd at Area 31) will merely walk across the street and jump on over to the 4th dimension -otherwise known as Cafe Nola when Mr Husband takes over the joint. If you already have been privileged to have witnessed the zany theatrics of “Kinny” Husband, his tight band, the neat Brian Wilson-esque jangly tunes, you know that this is more than a concert, you’re taking in an experience.

Setting this show apart from his previous shows, it’s going to be all “Kinny” at Nola. We’ll let him explain via FB:

Mr. Husband Returns to Nola for a full evening of Friendship and Wonderment. 2 kinny sets. 1 acoustical at 10pm and 1 electrical at 11pm. Should be pretty fun so come ok?

While you’re at it, pick up a copy of the newly released Subversive Zine #7, everywhere at fine downtown establishment like Area 31, Record Exchange, Guidos, even Hood College.

Except for Nola (long story – you don’t wanna know – we’re working on it).

EXTRA TIME:

Put this on your long distance calendar: hailing from Toronto, Lonely Parade is dropping by Guidos on Friday October 5th with indie dream popsters Flo Petite from Hagerstown also on the bill.
