Yo Frederick, this is going to be an infrequent column on SubversiveFrederick.com, here goes for Friday June 15th:
As we alluded to in Subversive #6, you, yes, you, YOU can make a difference in shaping the future of Frederick. One way to do it is by voting. Frederick has not had a good track record of coming out to the polls. Perhaps the resistance is not as strong in these parts. Let’s see if that paradigm can shift. Early voting is now (look here for early voting sites in Frederick County) until the primary day of voting, which falls on June 26th. You can research the candidates, but if you’re short on time, the FCTA – Frederick County Teachers Association has their handy dandy Apple ballot, find that here as a reference. They have a good number of candidates to look at – also check out Frederick County Progressives own endorsement card for other races that the FCTA doesn’t stake out.
Don’t be a poser: Vote.
After you vote, congratulate yourself for participating in democracy by taking in a great show at Guidos tonight (Friday June 15), it’s
Mean Siders, The Fun Boys, Hexgirlfriends & Blushed
show starts around 9pm tonight…
Mean Siders are from Brooklyn, Blushed from Philly, Hexgirlfriends (who I saw open for Cheshi a few months back and was blown away – very simpatico with TuneYards – they from Baltimore and putting this all together is Frederick’s own insane dance-meets-punk-meets-vaudeville – it’s the FUN BOYS, who were in great form last night at Cafe Nola. Speaking of last night – a smallish but energetic crowd at Nola witnessed a fantastic lineup with a fairly new band in town NOWNS (originally from Des Moines and now based in Frederick) with Giving Up – also from Iowa and still on on a long long tour.
I’m going to keep going back further in time and belated announce surprise and excitement about seeing a secret show at Cafe 11:11 last month – it turned out to be a quasi Qodesh records showcase – with Twin Jude, Echelon the Seeker and MA/// just killing it, jaws dropped by everyone who laid witness to the short sets by all the performers. Frederickland Podcasts did an interview with Marcelis, one of the members of Qodesh – that podcast dropped last week. In short, like Yellow K records being partially based in Frederick, it’s like a UFO landing in Frederick – it’s such a super rad sound – we’ll talk more about Qodesh records collective soon.
………….
Subversive Zine has hosted a few events in it’s short time; we’re going to help present another special event: Along with Area 31, it’s Cinemondays screening at Skystage on June 25th, film starting at dusk – roughly around 8pm —-wait I nearly forgot the film title: “Sita Sings the Blues” – an animated feminist take on the Hindu mythology around Sita and Prince Rama. Price: free! Don’t miss it. A number of Subversives will be there on hand…not sure what we’re going to do other than make very short, inflammatory opening statements – to be determined.

Ok now admittedly, the subject of soccer or the World Cup aren’t necessarily subversive-y subject matters, but a distinct sub-culture revolving around this most international of sports is developing slowly in the US. With the US winning the World Cup hosting rights in 2026 along with Mexico and Canada (despite Trump nearly sinking the bid), expect soccer to grow even more exponentially in the coming years. In the present, the World Cup is now here upon us and there are a few options for viewing the World Cup in public and act like a loon in the process – or reservedly.
